Kneejerk: Week 6, Wisconsin

Ohio State vs WisconsinAfter that offensive display (pun intended), I went home and washed the stank from the Buckeye offense off of me. I’m sure I’m not alone. The offense was U-G-L-Y! Thank goodness we have a bad ass defense to pick up the slack! Seriously, those guys were all over the place making plays and putting points on the board for the team. The Buckeyes ended up with a emphatic 31-13 win.

Last season, the team laid an offensive egg during the Purdue game. No offensive TD. Meanwhile, the D blocked a punt and took it to the house. Remember that? The difference between that game and this is that Wisconsin is actually a good team. The coaches had them ranked #25 in the country (while the AP writers were a bunch of haters).

It was a strange game but, at the end of the day, it was a big win. If the O can lay an egg like that and still win big, I guess I’m happy. Can’t afford to have a display like that in the November stretch, and there are plenty of things to work on. I’m confident it will get done. But, in the meantime, the defense will take matters into their own hands and keep the team undefeated in Big Ten play.

IN A NUTSHELL:

  • Isn’t it frustrating that one minute TP will be throwing a pick, and the next he is throwing a perfect deep pass for a TD? He’ll work it out with more reps.
  • So yes, I think TP can be a great college QB. I’m patient, and so should the rest of Buckeye Nation. He’s working very hard.
  • I know the same Oline from last week was intact, but I gotta wonder how the flu might have affected them (and Jake Ballard) today…
  • That’s it. Boom Herron is not allowed to play against Wisky anymore!
  • TP doesn’t really look like he’s having fun this season. Last year he was jawing with other players (and fans, lol). Looks like the swag was sucked right out of him! Hope it returns!
  • I’m giving the O a pass in the second half. Not only did Tress shut it down, but they didn’t even get the ball until under the 2 minute mark in the 3rd quarter!
  • I thought that John Clay would get his yards. He definitely didn’t. Held to just 59! He was the conference’s leading rusher, peeps!
  • Wisky got most of their big yardage on broken-ish plays when there should have been a sack and Tolzien (major props) found a way to get the ball to a receiver for 10-15 yards.
  • Whole lotta missed/ignored holding calls…
  • So happy Kurt Coleman got that pick 6. You know he wanted to redeem himself after being forced to sit out last week’s game.
  • Loved seeing the Glenville boys (Ray Small and Jermale Hines) get their TD’s as well!
  • That we still won big after the Badgers had the ball 47+ minutes and us just 17 is kinda funny, isn’t it? You have to laugh at it or it’ll drive you mad!
  • I saw a 10 point win and we got an 18 W. Pretty good.
  • I also predicted a defensive score. I wasn’t expecting 2 from the D, and another from special teams, but I’ll take ‘em!
  • My bad prediction was the offensive progress. The offense took a couple of steps back this week.
  • Didn’t hear Jay Valai’s number get called much during this game. That’s a good thing!
  • How awesome was Ross Homan today? Seriously. Lights out!
  • Here’s to hoping the coaches and other various pollsters only look at the boxscore and not the actual game film, or else we’ll drop in the polls. Actually, we might anyway. That’s just how it goes. Life in the Big Ten!
  • It was nice to see Pettrey nail a close-ish field goal attempt
  • I could not believe it when Wisky drove down the field — sucking so much time off the clock in the 3rd quarter — and ended up missing their FG. Couldn’t have planned it better!
  • Many thought we’d suffer without Larimore, but our Dline depth spoke for itself. Very impressed.
  • Loved all those 4th quarter Wisky drives where they went for it on 4th down and were stuffed. Very exciting to see in person!
  • Originally, I was really against using the “Seven Nation Army” track. But, in seeing how the team reacts to it, I’m now ok. It fires those guys up and they really get into it. I’m all for it!
