Baylor’s Griffin Comments on TP Hype
Even though it’s the off-season, I didn’t think it was time for a sensationalist headline. But don’t you worry. I had several thought up for this post such as “Griffin Disses Pryor, PA Football”. That’s just too much, isn’t it?
Anyway, check out the following exchaneg from a Q&A between Baylor QB Robert Griffin and ESPN’s Bruce Feldman.
Q: Even though you were probably the freshman QB who generated the most buzz last season, the guy coming into college that everyone was talking about was Terrelle Pryor. What do you make of all of the hype around recruiting?
Griffin: It’s politics. I’m not downing Pennsylvania football. I watched [Pryor's] highlights and I was like, yeah, this guy is good, but who are those guys across from him? You feel like you’re done wrong because your stats aren’t all the way up. But you just have to go out and prove it.
Oh snap! Someone send this to TP2 stat! Preseason motivation can be a good thing!
Nah, but seriously, does Griffin think that just because he doesn’t know who was on the opposing team’s defense that they obviously can’t be any good? Thus resulting in inflated stats? Who was defending Dayne Crist on his throws? E.J. Manuel? Matt Barkley? I know. That was an complete exaggeration. But that sure looks like what RG was trying to hint at. Surely he realizes that there is quality football outside the state of Texas?
Griffin is most definitely legit. Back when the All-Freshman lists were coming out, I was giving him the nod. Mostly because TP didn’t get a full season or fall camp as a starter, which set the offense (and his development) back a little. I saw some analysts giving the nod to Boise State’s QB, Kellen Moore (Wrong) or NC State’s Russell Wilson (So Wrong). With TP out of the running, it shouldn’t have even been debatable whether or not to put Griffin on any 1st team list. Should have been a no-brainer IMO.
He’s right about stats not telling the entire story, though. But that’s when things like film, camp and combine appearances, and offer lists can come into play. Terrelle Pryor had a University of Texas offer. Griffin did not. Had to be a reason for that, right? Just sayin’.
How bored am I?! I’ve been reduced to blogging about when other people simply mention TP. Is it time for Spring practice yet? Soon. Very soon. And April 2nd can’t get here soon enough!
Anyway, I now return you to your regularly scheduled programming; filling out NCAA tourney brackets. As you were, Buckeye fans!
