Pryor Makes History in First Start

Ohio State: 28 Troy: 10 [BOXSCORE]

I have a feeling that this won’t be the last time I use that post title on this blog. I honestly did not think that Tressel was going to start TP. I really didn’t think he had it in him, but he did. And the team produced accordingly because of that decision.

I’m going to look back, in a few years, and be happy that I was present for Terrelle’s first collegiate start. And he couldn’t have made us fans more happy with his performance. He helped beat Troy with not just his feet, but also his arm, and QB instincts. In short, he did not look like a true freshman out there leading the OSU offense.

Here are TP’s stats from the game: He was 10 for 16, passing for 139 yards. In addition, he ran the ball 14 times, racking up 66 yards on the ground. He did have an INT, but that really didn’t count. It was a hail mary pass to close the first half of the game.

With his efforts, Terrelle played his way into the Ohio State Football history books. He became the 1st true freshman QB to start since 1978, with Buckeye legend Art Schlichter. And on top of that, TP’s 4 touchdown showing set a record for OSU freshman. What a way to welcome in the Terrelle Pryor Era!

For his efforts, TP was named an AT&T ESPN All-American Player of the Week nominee.

Also of note was that Troy was supposed to play LSU last week. However, that game was postponed until later in the season because of Hurricane Ike. Many are already flapping their gums about how OSU struggled with Troy who “aren’t even a good team.” But just wait until LSU plays them later in this season. I am willing to bet that by then, Troy will be a good and quality opponent for them while we’ll still considered to be padding our schedule with cupcakes. Just watch. Oh, and Troy hung 30+ points on the Georgia Dogs last year. Yea, the same Georgia who thought they should be in the National Championship game. Guess Georgia sucks too. Next week Troy travels to OK to meet Oklahoma St. Solid team that will play anyone anywhere. Respect.

Postgame Revelations:
In his media session, TP said that he’d rather pass than run, but if the play or situation called for him to run and/or sacrifice his body for the team, he was all for it. But, but, but! I thought Running QB? Yea, whatevs. He also commented about how he thought he did. While the rest of us are lavishing praise on his performance, Terrelle thinks he messed up a lot! When the team goes over film, TP will be looking for ways he can improve. He will never be satisfied with his on-field performance. He wants to get better and better. That’s just how he rolls.

On such a good day, it wasn’t all positive to me. I was absolutely disgusted that Todd got booed on his incomplete pass. Todd is a Buckeye. He’s done some amazing things for this team. He’s a senior. He’s a captain. He deserves better than that. If Terrelle has a bad day, I hope people don’t do him like that. Just shameful.

BTW, I have some pictures to share, but you won’t be seeing them for a couple of hours. They’re not as good as the pros, but I was just as close from my seat, behind the Troy bench, and just 4 rows from the field.
