Jersey Watch 2008 Is In Full Effect

Terrelle Pyror’s #2 jersey? Not that sales were lagging or anything, because let’s be real, Buckeye Nation love them some OSU apparel.

Having said that,Terrelle Pryor may turn the OSU jersey-buying public into a frenzy if things go the way it’s been hinted over the past couple of months. He is set to wear the #2 jersey this season.

Rewind to April’s Spring Game. TP had a long talk with Cris Carter, OSU legend and future HOF inductee, as well as his son Duron, whom the Bucks are recruiting.

When the elder Carter was catching balls in the Scarlet & Gray, he wore the number 2 jersey. Terrelle has apparently claimed that number for the 2008 season.

During TP’s chat with Duron, who also plays wide receiver, Terrelle said he’d give up the #2 jersey should Duron decide to attend the Ohio State University and follow in his father’s footsteps. Nice gesture, no? And I bet you thought he was a conceited kid that only cared about himself. Takes a class act to make an offer like that.

When asked what number he’d switch to, were this scenario to play out, he joked that he’d take back the #11 — his high school number — from Jake Stoneburner. Maybe he’ll snatch up #7, which could be vacated shortly…

So, how would this move increase jersey sales? I’ve heard that NIKE contacted the staff, a few months ago, and asked if they could up production of the #2 jersey. Apparently they expect a significant spike, and not from the fans who aim to support super-cornerback Malcolm Jenkins.

If NIKE is already anticipating high sales (and count me in the crowd who will buy one), then one can only imagine that the same would hold true next season if Terrelle is under center with a different number. And even more so if his 1st season is as good as we all hope it is. I’m not going to front; my ass will buy any and every jersey he wears.

What if he switches this summer and doesn’t ever take a snap with the #2? I’d hold off on buying any jerseys until the roster is 100% finalized and all numbers are assigned.

Oh, and why all this talk in the first place? Duron Carter committed to the Buckeyes today, becoming the 18th member of the 2009 recruiting class.
